Walter H. Greenleaf, born in Germany and educated in the United States, worked for the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station, 1944-1947. From 1947 until his retirement in 1982 he was on the faculty of the Auburn University College of Agriculture and the staff of the Agricultural Experiment Station as a geneticist and professor of horticulture. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
